Port of Copenhagen Malmo

The Port of Copenhagen/Malmö, also known as CMP (Copenhagen Malmö Port), is a unique example of international collaboration in port operations and management. Formed from the merger of the ports of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden, CMP serves as a strategic Northern European hub for cargo, passengers, and cruise ships, leveraging the strengths and strategic locations of both cities across the Øresund Strait.

Short History of the Merger: The merger, finalized in 2001, was a pioneering move aimed at enhancing competitiveness, optimizing port operations, and creating a stronger unified port entity that could better serve the Baltic Sea region and beyond. This initiative was part of broader regional integration efforts following the construction of the Øresund Bridge, symbolizing a new era of cooperation between Denmark and Sweden. The combined operation has since capitalized on shared resources and expertise to improve efficiency, environmental sustainability, and service offerings.

Terminals:

  1. Container Terminal: Located primarily in Copenhagen, this terminal facilitates the handling and storage of containerized cargo. Equipped with modern cranes and logistics systems, it supports efficient loading, unloading, and transshipment operations, catering to both regional and international trade routes.

  2. Cruise Terminal: CMP operates several cruise terminals, with facilities in both Copenhagen and Malmö. These terminals welcome cruise passengers from around the world, providing gateway access to the Baltic Sea's attractions. Copenhagen's cruise terminals, in particular, are among the busiest in Europe, offering state-of-the-art services and amenities to accommodate the world's largest cruise ships.

  3. Ro-Ro and Ferry Terminal: The Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) and ferry terminals facilitate the transportation of vehicles, trailers, and passenger ferries. Located in both cities, these terminals are vital for intra-regional connectivity, supporting both commercial transport activities and passenger mobility across the Øresund region and to other destinations in the Baltic Sea area.

CMP offers insights into the benefits of international cooperation in port operations and regional development, showcasing innovative practices in logistics, passenger services, and sustainable port management.
